Billy Davies leaves Derby.

Derby County have announced that manager Billy Davies has left as both parties agreed to go separate ways.

The Rams are at the bottom of the Premiership table with just one win to their credit, after having earned promotion to the top-flight by winning the play-off final against West Brom last season.

Derby chairman Adam Pearson said on the club’s official website: “I have met with Billy Davies this morning and we have decided mutually in the best interests of both parties that to go our separate ways is the correct decision at this time.

“Billy Davies leaves Derby County with our best wishes and our genuine gratitude in achieving a magnificent promotion to the Premier League, where everyone connected with the club wanted to be.

“We wish Billy all the best for his future career and both parties will now move forward, which I am sure will lead to future success for Billy Davies and Derby County.”

There are speculation that the ex-England manager Steve McClaren is lining for the vacancy.

Execuses by some premier league managers

Sir Alex

Sir Alex is never beaten - it's only the score that sometimes suggests Manchester United have lost when some dirty, rotten team team has got extremely lucky. When parading yet another new strip  - a grey one - United found themselves 3-0 down to Southampton at half-time in 1996, Sir Alex offered : "The players could not see each other." They switch to white shirts but still lost 3-1. The grey kit was never seen again.

Kenny Dalglish

In 1998 his midas touch was beginning to desert him. In the pre-Guilt days, Newcastle were not only struggling they were playing un-sexy football and clearly didn't fancy it when drawn away to little Stevenage in the FA Cup. After trying to get the tie switched to St. James's Park, Dalglish lost the PR battle to the minnows. On the bitterly cold day, the game was played on a frozen pitch and Newcastle weere lucky to escape with a draw. Dalglish blamed " the balls being too bouncy".

Tommy Docherty

He is always good value for a quid. But the ex-Manchester United manager was no slouch at excuses, either, especially when he was playing in the 1954 World Cup, Scotland's official messed up big-time, taking a squad of just 13 players. But when they lost 7-0 to Uruguay, the Doc didn't blame the organisation but the length of the Uruguayan national anthem, which he said "kept the Scotland players standing to attention for too long before the game started.

Sir Alex Fergusion on clash with Arsenal.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to the title chase and considers Saturday’s top-of-the table clash with Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal likely to be the ‘key match’ in deciding the Premiership race this season.

The Red Devils, who had won the title last season to end a wait of four years, are equal on points with the unbeaten Gunners, who however have a game in hand.

"It's still an open race but Arsenal have had a great start and they're the ones we are chasing at the moment," Ferguson told the Daily Star.

"Everything is coming together, as I thought it would, and in good time to take on Arsenal in what could be a key match in our title defence.

"The main thing is I know we will chase them with great fervour and determination."

Sporting’s Soares Franco Rules Out January Transfer For Man United & Arsenal Target Miguel Veloso

by Niraj Prabhu on Mon, 2007-10-29

Manchester United and Arsenal will have to wait at least till the summer for Miguel Veloso as Sporting Lisbon president Felipe Soares Franco ruled out a January transfer.

According to reports, the 21-year-old is a target for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils as well as Arsene Wenger’s Gunners, while Serie A giants Juventus and Internazionale are also said to be interested in the versatile Portuguese international, who has a £20million release clause in his contract.

Veloso, who had recently suggested he would love to go to Old Trafford, had agreed to stay at least 18 months with the Portuguese club when he signed his new contract in January 2007, according to Soares Franco.

Soares Franco said: "There really does not exist a chance of the player's exit. This is down to the deal he signed last season - it is impossible.

"We are not interested in negotiating this subject because Miguel Veloso is one of our main players for this campaign."

Chelsea Striker Drogba Reveals That German International Michael Ballack Made Wrong Choice By Leaving Bayern Munich

By Angel Fernandes on Thu, 2007-10-25

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba believes that his teammate Michael Ballack got his calculations all wrong when deciding to switch alliances from Bayern Munich to the Blues in 2006.

The German international came to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer from German side Bayern Munich, but his debut season was highly disappointing for him, as well as the Chelsea fans.

According to Drogba, Ballack has been struggling with the Blues and would have been better off had he chosen teams like Manchester United or Arsenal.

"It is hard for Ballack - Chelsea is special," he told the Sun.

"I'm convinced he would have had an easier time at Manchester United or Arsenal.”

"They benefit from a well-balanced team - he would have been a better fit there.”

"Here, we depend on our individuals so maybe Chelsea is not the right club for Ballack."

Dimitar Berbatov Reluctant To Open Talks On New Deal At Tottenham:

Dimitar Berbatov has reportedly shown no inclination to open talks on a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur, thus adding fuel to fire that the Bulgarian striker is unsettled at White Hart Lane.

The 26-year-old, who moved to Spurs in the 2006 summer from Bayer Leverkusen and proved his class in the debut season in the Premiership, still has more than two years on his existing deal.

However, the north London club are keen to tie him down to a longer contract to avoid interest from the rivals.

But with Manchester United being linked with Berbatov, who has reportedly fallen out with boss Martin Jol, there might be offers coming his way in the January transfer window.

Premier League news and transfer rumours.

Manchester United, full-back, Gary Neville is expected to be back in action.  Sir Alex has confirmed that he has been back in full training.

Much talk has been surrounding the transfer of Ronaldinho to Chelsea. The Daily Mail reports that he is in talks with Barcelona and desperately wants to make a move to Chelsea. The two clubs were reportedly unable to agree a transfer fee, with the Catalans valuing the player at around 100million Euros (around £66million), while Chelski were willing to pay 'only' 70million Euros (£47.5million).

Now the Mail claims that both parties have agreed to delay the move by 11 months.

Ronaldinho was said to be 'disappointed' that a deal could not be reached, as he had been given strong indications that he would be allowed to move to England.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are eyeing another Sporting Lisbon discovery Rabiu Ibrahim.

The Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has previously raided the Portuguese giants for Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, is reportedly impressed by the 17-year-old Nigerian attacking midfielder.

The paper suggests Ferguson will be banking on their past relationship with Sporting to conduct yet another piece of business and win the race over their fierce rivals Liverpool and Chelsea.

Manchester United’s interest in Kerlon, has been confirmed by the Brazilian forward’s agent Mino Raiola.

The 19-year-old, who is rated at around £14 million (€20 million) at Cruzeiro, has however seen a knee injury ruling out a move during the summer, although Torino still showed interest in taking him to Italy in close season.

Renowned for balancing the ball on his head or ‘seal dribble’, Kerlon had been linked with United in the British press for some time after boss Sir Alex Ferguson spotted the talented youth international during the South American championships.

Raiola told calciomercato: "His name is in the note-books of all the top European clubs. Before his latest knee injury, he was close to signing for Manchester United.

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has disclosed that Spain champions have not given up on the possibility of signing Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack.

According to Schuster, Ballack’s wages was a problem in a move to the Bernabeu

Jose Mourinho resign as Chelsea's boss.

I guessed football fans throughout the world is stunned by the shocking news. Who would have guessed that after three bad games (by Chelsea's standard) that Jose would have walked out of Chelsea.
Mounting fractions between Jose and Abramovich, may have resulted in his departure.

It will be sad if Jose is not involved in the EPL. I do hope that Tottenham will take him. He is a great manager, and without him the EPL will be very quiet.

Ryan Giggs praised by Bobby Charlton.

The 33 year old Welshman is hoping to have recover from a hamstring injuryin to play in tomorrow's game with Everton at Goodison Park. If Giggs makes the trip, he will move on to 722 appearance.
He is set to break Bobby Charlton record of playing 759 times for United during his 20 year playing career.

Giggs contract expires next summer, and an extension of his contract is most likely to take place. With the extension, there appears no reason why he should not overake Sir Bobby all time record.

"I would love it if Ryan got the record" Sir Bobby said, "It would be so fitting and I would be pleased to have the opportunity to go onto the pitch and present him with something. In fact, if they didn't ask me, I would pester them until they did'.

Premier League news and rumours.

Manchester United have made an inquiry about Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins. The Sun reckons Obafemi Martins is the more likely target - he's got a £13m release clause in his contract - and if Ferguson can't get him, he'll have a bit of Dimitar Berbatov for £25m.

Berbatov is reported to be at the centre of problems between Jol and the Spurs board after he reacted angrily to being substituted during the opening-day defeat at Sunderland.
Reports suggest that Jol then recommended the sale of the Bulgarian striker on the grounds that he is not a 'team player', a suggestion which did not go down well with some members of the Tottenham board.
Jol's relationship with the club's board has grown increasingly fractious and a shortlist of potential replacements was reputedly drawn up last week. Although Ramos heads the list, the names of Marcello Lippi and Mark Hughes also feature. In what must be a typo, The Daily Mail adds that of 'Harry Redknapp'.

Yakubu's move to Everton is set to collapse as Middlesbrough are demanding £12m for the striker.

Carlo Cudicini wants to leave Chelsea by the end of the month - but has missed out on the chance to join Man City. (Daily Mirror)

Rio Ferdinand is refusing to press the panic button, despite Manchester United's miserable start to their defence of the Premier League title. "There is plenty of character at United but we need to get that victory as soon as possible. Hopefully, it'll come against Spurs on Sunday."

David Nugent realises his days are numbered at Portsmouth after just three games. Derby will pay £6m for him and Harry Redknapp will use that cash to buy Nicolas Anelka. Unless Redknapp is already Spurs manager. Or Anelka is already at Man United.

William Gallas, the Arsenal defender suffered a groin injury in his side's 1-1 Premier League draw with Blackburn on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

English Premier League mid-week news.

Carlos Tevez ready to take over Rooney role. He is expected to made his debut at Portsmouth on Thursday (AEST), replacing injury victim Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson had hoped to hold the forward in reserve until Sunday's Manchester derby, when United travel to face near neighbour City. but he admitted that with Rooney sidelined for up to two months after fracturing his left foot in Sunday's season-opener with Reading, his new signing will be thrown straight into the action against Pompey

Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Chelsea winger Arjen Robben, according to reports in Spain.

Both AS and Marca claim the deal is closer than ever to being done, with the latter reporting that Blues owner Roman Abramovich is thought to be prepared to accept Real's offer of 30million euros for the Dutchman.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane has confirmed that he is interested in signing the veteran former Newcastle United and Manchester United striker Andy Cole.

The 35-year-old is without a club after being released by Portsmouth earlier this summer and Keane is looking to add him to his striking options before the end of the month.

The Brazilian-born Portuguese international is DESPERATE to work with the Special One again, but goes with the classic line of 'at the moment I'm a Barcelona player'

Ferguson on Fernando Torres.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Liverpool's new record signing Fernando Torres will be a big hit at Anfield, after confirming that Manchester United had been keen to land the Spain striker.

Ferguson told The Daily Mail: "Torres is athletic, he's brave enough and he'll run the channels for them, which he did well in Madrid.

"He's good in the air and has got a physique and he's quicker than you think.

"Over the past few years there has been some interest for us in Torres, but every time he signed a new contract. Sometimes you get fed up with that kind of thing."

Twenty-three-year-old frontman Torres made a £26.5million switch to the Reds this summer after finally deciding to leave Atletico Madrid, having previously been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United Gabriel Heinze and Patrice Evra

Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out any possibility of Gabriel Heinze leaving Manchester United for Liverpool.
The £6million offer was immediately rejected by United, even though it met their private valuation.
Many clubs from across Europe have also been linked with the 29-year-old, including Spanish champions Real Madrid, but it is unclear if anyone else has made an offer.
Real Madrid and Inter Milan have both been linked with the 29-year-old, who has become something of a folk hero among United fans because of the robust nature of his defending.
Ferguson is not convinced that the left-back is determined to leave the club, but if he was to stay he'd be competing with Patrice Evra for a place in the starting line-up.

Defender Patrice Evra,  admitted that he will no be the first choice left back but will fight for his place. Despite his recent form, the Frenchman does not believe his place in the first-team is set in stone. He told Sky Sports News: “I'm not the first choice, I'm just a player for Manchester United.
Evra also had a few words for his team mate, saying: “Football is quick and you don't know. Gaby maybe is back and Mikael (Silvestre) I thought he played very well.

“I say when you do not give your best, the boss will take you on the bench. Nobody, in every game, is sure to play the game.”

Owen Hargreaves talks about Man.United.

Article from BBC Sport

New Manchester United signing Owen Hargreaves said he plans to win plenty of silverware at Old Trafford.

The England midfielder signed a reported £17m four-year deal after signing from Bayern Munich on 1 July.

"I'm looking forward to the next four seasons and having a lot of success and winning as many titles as possible," said the 26-year-old.

"There are so many fantastic players here and I think I'm just piece of a puzzle really."

Hargreaves added: "Every player brings his qualities and obviously mine are in the defensive midfield area.

"Hopefully I can win some tackles and keep a clean sheet for the back four, give them some protection and get the ball to the fantastic offensive players that we have.

"I'm 26, I've spent 10 years at a great club like Bayern Munich and had a lot of success as well.

"I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my career and to have the opportunity to play for one of, if not the, biggest club in the world."

Hargreaves was unveiled on Monday along with fellow new signing in Portuguese winger Nani.

"We have been monitoring Nani for almost as long as Cristiano," said United coach Sir Alex Ferguson.

"In a perfect world, he would have stayed in Portugal for another year but circumstances forced us into action.

"He is different to Cristiano in that he can play on both sides of the pitch but also in the middle. He is quick, has a terrific engine and I know we are getting a very talented, flexible player."

Manchester United to sign Carlos Tevez.

According to The Daily Mail, Carlos Tevez is set to sign for Manchester United.  Tevez has reportedly agreeded to join Manchester United last night in a permanent deal worth more than £20 million.
Subject to any challenge from West Ham, who insist that they still own the registration of the player who was instrumental in securing their Premiership survival last season, the deal will be completed next week.
If confirmed, the news from South America, where Tevez is with Argentina's Copa America squad, means that United will have taken their summer buying spree beyond £70 milion - making them world football's biggest spenders.

The Times also believes that 'Manchester United have won the race to sign Tévez'.

'It is likely that Tévez will move to United initially on a 12-month loan deal, with a fee of about £4million payable to Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who owns the economic rights to the player, and wages in excess of £3 million. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, would also want the option of making the move permanent at the end of next season,' the newspaper reports.

If Tevez did sign, he would join United's other summer recruits in England midfielder Owen Hargreaves, Portugal winger Nani, Brazilian midfielder Anderson and keeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Summer transfer rumours.

Chelsea is believed to be making a £14million bid for Sevilla's brilliant Brazilian Daniel Alves.  If it goes through, it will be Chelsea biggest move of this  summer for for the speedy South American right-back.

According to the SunSport, Barcelona is making a £12million bid for Frank Lampard, despite his agent vowing on Monday that he would stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Times doesn't sound particularly sure that Chelsea will retain Arjen Robben's services, noting: 'Robben has two years left on his contract, but Real Madrid are confident that they have been given the green light to sign him for about £15 million.'

Rafa Benitez is said to be increasingly confident that he can lure Gabriel Heinze from Old Trafford to Anfield. The Times agrees, reporting: 'Benítez is confident that he can seal Heinze's signature for about £4 million - £2.9 million less than United paid for the 29-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain in June 2004. Heinze would strengthen Benítez's defensive options on the left side and would also provide cover at centre back for Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia, 33.

Is Arsene Wenger going to buy more after the acquisition of Eduardo?
The Guardian says 'yes': 'The signing of Eduardo does not signal the end of Wenger's attempt to rebuild Arsenal's attack and he is understood to still be interested in Bolton's Nicolas Anelka and Newcastle's Obefemi Martins.'

The Sun also says 'yes': 'Eduardo's old side Dinamo Zagreb claim Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is plotting another raid - for £5m-rated midfielder Ognjen Vukojevic.'

Sven-Goran Eriksson is believed to have made Middlesbrough striker Ayegbeni Yakubu one of his top targets should he become Manchester City manager.

Yakubu, along with Bolton's Nicolas Anelka, is being linked with a move to Eastlands.
According to The Times, 'Gareth Southgate will have face-to-face discussions with Yakubu Ayegbeni today, but there is a growing acceptance that the Nigeria striker will be leaving Middlesbrough this summer. The manager will herald the beginning of preseason training by asking his leading striker for an update on his position, with Manchester City emerging as suitors for his signature.'

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek could remain in the Premier League after claiming he is wanted by Bolton Wanderers.

Everton manager David Moyes is considering launching a bid for Manchester United pair Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is set to spend £30m on Jermain Defoe, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nigel Reo-Coker and Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Thierry Henry set to move to Barcelona.

It's been reported that Arsenal has confirmed a £16m transfer to Barcelona, subjected to the Frenchman, 29, passing a medical.

So how will Arsenal cope with the departure of their superstar striker?

Henry cut a tired, uninspired figure last season and was troubled by injury.

Second half of last season, the team played without the skipper, and goals were hard to come by. They were struggling without a leader in front to guide them to the once mighty 'Gunners'.
So who will Arsene Wenger buy to replace him?
Arsenal will need someone who is capable to score goals and lead the front line.

However, what about Arsene Wenger?
Is there a possible move for him? It's been reported that Barcelona is moving in for him...

It was reported that Sunderland is ready to offer a transfer for Manchester United, Alan Smith.  According to agent Alex Black, Smith is happy to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his first-team place.
Black told BBC Radio Five Live, "He's still got two years left at arguably the biggest football club in the world," However, Black did admit Smith was concerned that United had not yet taken up the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months to 2010.

Transfer rumours.(June'07)

Carlos Tevez is set to snub Man. United by moving to Inter Milan instead. Then again, the Argentine could be about to snub Inter by declaring he wants to stay in the Premiership. Confused? Well, so are this morning's newspapers.
The Premiership champions have previously been reluctant to sign the Argentine due to the murky nature of his ownership. It's thought that they would prefer to sign Tevez on a season's loan - a prospect that has not impressed the player. 'Tevez, apparently, has told sources that he is not keen on a temporary move to United and would prefer to join Inter instead,' notes the Telegraph.
However, The Guardian remains convinced that Tevez could be moving to Old Trafford. In a direct contrast to the Telegraph report, it announces that 'United are increasingly optimistic of pulling off the deal' and 'Tevez would look favourably upon a move that takes him to one of England's leading clubs.'
In short, nobody really knows what is going on.

Liverpool could set their sights on £16m Diego Forlan rather than Barcelona's £35m-rated Samuel Eto'o. The Liverpool Reds have been surprisingly quiet in the transfer market this summer and The Times reports that the reason is very simple: a lack of significant funds.

David Nugent has told Everton he will not wait all summer to clinch a move to Goodison Park. (Daily Mail)

Transfer rumours - 2/6/07

After already signed Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, Manchester United is making inquiries into Bolton's Nicolas Anelka.
According to
The Guardian, Ferguson's 'initial targets had included Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham Hotspur, though they have effectively been priced out of his budget following this week's spending.
'Another highly-rated striker, the Ajax forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored 23 goals in 34 league appearances in Holland last term, has indicated he would prefer to remain in the Eredivisie for a further season.'
Following their triple purchase,
chief executive David Gill has indicated that the bulk of the club's 'major' transfer work has now been completed.
And while one striker comes into Old Trafford, another could be on his way out. Tottenham want England international Alan Smith. (The Sun)

So what is Chelsea buying?
The club have agreed personal terms on a four-year contract worth £50,000 a week with Claudio Pizarro, the Peru striker, who will join them on July 1.
According to
The Times. 'Pizarro will become the third player to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer on a free transfer, with Steve Sidwell joining from Reading and Alex, the Brazil defender, returning from a three-year loan at PSV Eindhoven.'

The Sun carries quotes from Luis Felipe Scolari's agent indicating the Chelski job is Big Phil's if he wants it.
'Sources close to Scolari insist the approach took place in the last three weeks. That would mean Mourinho could yet lose his job this summer.'

Andy Gray looking at Man. United and Chelsea for the FA Cup Finals.

Andy Gray at SKY sports assessing the two teams for the FA Cup Finals.

He thinks that Ricardo Carvalho absence could prove critical...

"With Manchester United team, there are full of match winners - Ronaldo, Rooney Giggs, Scholes, even Carrick and Vidic.
Looking at Chelsea, you have Drogba, Lampard, Joey Cole....

Both teams will be ultra-cautious and he thinks that United will try and play some football, to make a point about the difference between the two sides.

This season United likes to play expansive football and hopefully that will not change in the final. As for Chelsea, they are a different animal, as we know, they're about attitude and mental strength.

Hopefully, United won't adopt Chelsea pragmatic approach and the two teams cancel each other out.

The key for me is prbable the absense of Ricardo Carvalho - he's had a good seaon for Chelsea and if he's missing, it will be a
double whammy because Michael Essien will be pulled into central defence as Jose clearly doesn't trust Khalid Boulahrouz.

They have nobody with Essien's kind of drive in midfield, and we saw against Liverpool in Europe how they lacked that oomph. Chelsea don't get that from Obi Mikel, from Makelele or even from Lampard - Essien is the man who drives them forward from midfield and prevents it all being about closing down space and stopping people playing.

Put him back in defence and I think you'd have to say that United have the edge. Go into the realms of fantasy and you'd have to say that if United had Drogba, they would be unstoppable. They have everything all over the park except up front, where Sir Alex has to make a decision between trusting Alan Smith or Ole Gunnar Solksjaer or going for the more conservative option of bringing in an extra midfielder and leaving Rooney up front on his own.

Let's hope as neutrals that he chooses the first option and the new Wembley gets the final it deserves."

West Ham may still go down.

From Jermey Butler in London- Fox Sports

WIGAN Athletic chairman Dave Whelan said overnight he believes West Ham could still be relegated from the English Premier League if Sheffield United can prove the London side registered Carlos Tevez illegally for a second time.

He was speaking in the aftermath of West Ham securing Premier League survival with a 1-0 win over champion Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Whelan accepts there is no chance of overturning the Premier League's decision to fine West Ham £5.5 million ($13 million), instead of deducting points last month when the club admitted the player's initial registration was illegal.

But he is adamant the second registration was also illegal - an assertion denied overnight by the Premier League - and wants West Ham to face another disciplinary committee. He said Wigan and three other clubs are backing action.

"We can't reverse the earlier decision, we have to accept that, but if he has been signed illegally again, then West Ham will go down," said Whelan.

"I feel he has been registered illegally for a second time. How can they open a new transfer window to sign the player?

"They opened a new window at 4pm on Friday and left it open until midday the next day so he could play against Wigan."

When the two sides met the following day, West Ham won the match 3-0.

Whelan said that Sheffield United is waiting on a circular from the Premier League before deciding what legal action to take.

Transfer rumours - 13/5/07

After spending a successful season with Blackburn, Benni McCarty is thinking on a possible move.
He told The Sun: "If a club like Chelsea comes looking for you, you must seriously consider the opportunity. A chance to go to Chelsea - or any other Champions League team in England or Spain - would be hard to turn down. Blackburn gave me my chance and, even though it was not a big transfer fee, I trust that I have already paid them back with my commitment and goals. But I miss Champions League football, it means everything for any player with ambitions. If I end up being sold by Blackburn and they make a good profit, fantastic. Mourinho has coached me. We won things together and he really knows me inside out. If he ever were to sign me again, it would be because he knows exactly what he's getting and that I've managed to settle down in England quite quickly."

Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov to stay at Totteham.
Berbatov told Sky Sports. 'I hope next season we can challenge this 'Big Four', like you say in England. Maybe we will be in the first four clubs. The most entertaining thing this season is Spurs. We have scored so many goals, we tried to play good, we tried to entertain the fans. To me that's one of the most important things - to entertain, to enjoy when you play, because it's a game."

Veteran Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has signed a one-year extension to his current contract that will keep him at Fratton Park until the end of the 2008-09 campaign

Birmingham City have completed the permanent signing of Arsenal's teenage midfielder Fabrice Muamba on a three-year deal.

Martin O'Neill is hoping to tie Patrik Berger to a new contract at Villa Park..

Liverpool have confirmed that Robbie Fowler will leave the club at the end of the season.

Chelsea defender Nuno Morais has left the club to join Cyprus side Apoel Nicosia on a two-year deal.

Sir Alex Fergusion preparing for next season.

Sir Alex planning for next season.

Manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Fergusion is planning his move for next season battle. He knows that teams like Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will be looking to dethroned the champions.

Chelsea with limitless cash, will been plotting a revenge, but Sir Alex is ready for a battle suggesting that he will be requesting for a $60m tranfers fund from the Glazers.

So the areas that he will be looking to improve :-

Goalkeepers

The experienced Edwin Van Sar will be competing with the youngster Ben Foster.

Foster was outstanding, even in Watford's relegation, and with an England place potentially up for grabs, will have no intention of sitting on the sidelines.

Tomasz Kuszczak will be their thrid choice keeper.

Defenders

The back four of Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Even had an outstanding season and the defensive record speak for itself.

Sir Alex is unlikely to strengthen his central defence as they have John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Mike Silverstre as cover.

So what about the right-back berth, where Gary Neville is increasingly troubled by injury, and where he appears to have no natural deputy, despite the best efforts of Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea?

Neville is the consummate professional and a huge influence who will play his full part next season, but Ferguson must look at finding an eventual successor.

Gareth Bale, the left back of Southamton will be a likely target.

Midfield

Owen Hargreaves is United most wanted midfielder since the early start of season. With his arrival he will play a vital role as a holding midfield man.

Hargreaves will provide the perfect foil for the steady Michael Carrick and for Paul Scholes - keeping the back door closed while the rejuvenated former England man performs his creative brilliance.

Carrick is a reliable rather than sparkling figure, while Scholes provides the cutting edge. Hargreaves would give United that resilient, dogged quality in midfield.

The wide positions are well covered by the ageless Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Darren Fletcher able to cover across the midfield.

Attack

Ferguson has had 20 goals each from Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming to the end of his career and Louis Saha's lack of appearances seemingly an increasing source of frustration, he will beef up his attack with a high-quality addition.

The question will be - what sort of player does he go for?

Will Ferguson go for the out-and-out goalscorer or a man who provides the best of both worlds?

If he goes for the natural predator, this may bring Tottenham's Jermain Defoe into the equation.

But watch out for a move for Newcastle's Michael Owen should he prove his fitness.

Ferguson has been a massive admirer for many years, and don't bet against the fiercely ambitious Owen being willing to leave Newcastle, despite having just spent 12 months on the treatment table.

Ferguson may go for the all-round option by attempting to sign a creator and a scorer in the form of brilliant Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov - or even finally persuade Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres to try the Premiership.

One thing is for certain, he will buy a forward and Owen might be worth a punt for those fancying a bet.

If he lands the man he wants, Ferguson will have an array of riches, with Rooney the spearhead and Alan Smith on the road back to full fitness.

He means business - because he knows his great rival Mourinho will be plotting behind the scenes to ensure there is no repeat of the scenes of celebration planned for Old Trafford this Sunday.

How Man. United prevented Chelsea from winning the Premier League.

Article from BBC sports.

1. Solid at the back

Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic has also enjoyed a fine season in the centre of defence, with his no-nonsense defensive style complementing Rio Ferdinand's more cultured approach.

Patrice Evra has matured at left-back while Gabriel Heinze has proved versatile and effective when required.

United's defence has often been regarded as error prone over recent seasons but it has had a more solid look this time around - and been excellently protected by summer signing Michael Carrick.

And although United have kept fewer clean sheets than the Londoners, they have only conceded one goal or more in a game five times compared to nine by the Blues.

2. The Engine Room

One crucial difference between this season and last has been the return of Paul Scholes.

Scholes missed five months of the last campaign with an eye problem and his presence has restored craft and maturity to the United midfield.

His range and accuracy of passing has allowed United's myriad attacking talents to flourish and he has formed a superb combination alongside Carrick, whose form has gone a long way to silencing those who questioned the value of his £18.6m transfer fee.

One of Chelsea's big summer signings was Michael Ballack who joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

The German has had a disappointing season, not gelling with Frank Lampard in the middle of the park and looking a shadow of the player who was so dynamic for Germany at last year's World Cup

3. The Wingers

Mourinho's first two seasons at Stamford Bridge saw him favour the use of three in midfield, with two wide players and a solitary striker in front of them.

The Chelsea boss had an impressive pool of wide players in Joe Cole, Arjen Robben, Damien Duff and, for his second season at the helm, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

But Cole, so impressive for Chelsea in recent years, has missed all but a handful of games this season, while Robben has also spent large spells on the sidelines.

With Duff sold to Newcastle last summer and Wright-Phillips often overlooked, Chelsea have not been as effective down the flanks.

United boss Ferguson also understands the importance of width and in the evergreen Ryan Giggs has a veteran winger who is both consistent and potent.

But the revelation has been Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 22-year-old has learnt to refine his vast array of skills. Instead of constantly overplaying he has used his gifts to hurt the opposition - as his return of 17 Premiership goals testifies.

4. The Goals

Didier Drogba is the Premiership's top scorer with 19 goals and his combination of physical power and finishing ability has proved too much for many defences.

Unfortunately for Chelsea their £30m summer signing last summer Andriy Shevchenko has endured a difficult first season in England.

United's forward line this season - with the likes of Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney, Henrik Larsson, Giggs and Ronaldo - has been fluid and inventive and have not relied on van Nistelrooy to apply the finishing touch.

5. The Winning Ways

Both Chelsea and Manchester United have enjoyed lengthy periods of excellent form.

Crucially, though, it was United who made the best start, moving to the top of the Premiership and subjecting Mourinho's Chelsea to the role of pursuers for the first time.

United lost just one of their first 17 fixtures, drawing two and winning 14.

During the same period Chelsea lost two and drew three, winning 12 to give United a five-point lead.

Chelsea won nine straight games starting on 31 January - their longest winning streak of the season. United responded with seven consecutive victories of their own before losing to Portsmouth.

It seemed as though United might crack under the pressure of Chelsea's brilliant run but Mourinho's team lost crucial momentum with draws against Newcastle and Bolton.
In the end it seems Chelsea left themselves just too much ground to make up on their rivals.

Chelsea won the title in 2005 with 95 points and the year after with 91. This year they can still reach 87 points.

It is not that Mourinho's team have suffered a dramatic lowering of standards, more that for the first time they have been seriously challenged.

United finished with 77 points in 2005 and 83 in 2006. This year they have played more consistently than in recent years and with a team that has a superb blend of experience and youth, United can finish the season with 94 points.

The coming together of the two clubs owes more to United's improvement than Chelsea's decline - and it has made for a brilliant title race.

Charlton relegated from the Premier League.

Charlton 0 Spurs 2

Within the 10 minutes of the game, Dimitar Berbatov scored a superb solo goal and former Charlton player Jermain Defoe sealed the Addicks' relegation with a powerful shot.

The Addicks needed to win to have any chance of survival going into their final game of the season at Liverpool.

Manchester CIty decline Man.United request.

Manchester City have snubbed a plea from United to move their derby fixture back 24 hours.

It is understood representatives from the Old Trafford club requested the game at Eastlands, scheduled for lunchtime on Saturday, May 5, be moved in order to provide them with more recovery time as they are not due to return from their Champions League semi-final in Milan until the early hours of Thursday morning.

Given Sir Alex Ferguson's men would only have 48 hours preparation time, United felt it was perfectly reasonable to request a delay, even though the match is due to be screened by Sky TV.

However, City rejected the request out of hand and have insisted the game should be played as planned, with a 12.45pm kick-off.

News of the snub will only further fuel tensions between the two sets of fans over what has long been viewed as a powderkeg game.

At one stage, it was feared the match could not only see United crowned champions but send City down, a nightmare scenario for Greater Manchester Police.

The Blues' relegation fears have now eased but the Red Devils still have an outside chance of clinching the title by winning the match.

For such a situation to unfold, United would have to beat Everton at Goodison Park this weekend, while Chelsea would need to lose their home game against Bolton.

That would leave Ferguson's side holding a six-point advantage, knowing a win over City would effectively seal the championship given their vast goal difference advantage over Chelsea.
