Transfer rumours 18-1-08

West Ham and Fulham are interested in signing Hertha Berlin striker Marko Pantelic. (sportinglife.com)

Tottenham may be encouraged in their attempts to sign midfielder Tiago from Juventus after the player said it would be "best" if he left the Italian club. (Goal.com)

Charlton winger Jerome Thomas has yet to agree a new deal with the club and Derby or Middlesbrough could pounce. (thisislondon.co.uk )

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has not ruled out Tottenham target Fred leaving in the January transfer window. (Press Association)

Kevin Keegan the new Newcastle United manager.


Kevin Keegan to return to Newcastle United.
The 56-year-old former Manchester City boss managed the Magpies from 1992 to 1997 and will return to St James' Park as Sam Allardyce's successor.

The ex-England coach was running his "Soccer Circus" in Glasgow after quitting his job at City in March 2005.

He was also linked with a return to the club last summer as director of football following Mike Ashley's takeover. Keegan took Newcastle to promotion back to the top flight in 1993 and came close to winning the league title in the 1995-96 season when they led Manchester United by 12 points before finishing as runners up.

Harry Redknapp will try to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe for Portsmouth this week. (The Mirror)

The Mail on Sunday reckons that Tottenham 'are expected to make a £7 million move this week for Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.'

Spurs, meanwhile, are ready to move for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing. (The Mirror)

The Sunday Mirror also claims that 'Bolton are set to sign former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse for £4million after earmarking the French international as the man to replace Nicolas Anelka And Bolton boss Gary Megson has agreed a £4m deal with AZ Alkmaar to sign Icelandic defender Gretar Steinsson.
